Technical Provisions

Independent Technical Provisions reviews for non‑life reinsurers

A structured, independent review of your best estimate liabilities and risk margin — for your board, your auditors, or your own assurance before sign‑off.

What the review covers

The scope is tailored to your business and materiality, but a full review typically looks at six areas.

Data

Completeness, accuracy and appropriateness of the data behind your projections, with reconciliation to accounting records and claims systems.

Claims provisions

Projection methods and assumptions by homogeneous risk group, treatment of large losses and catastrophe events, expenses and events not in data.

Premium provisions

Unearned and bound‑but‑not‑incepted business, expected loss ratios, future premium cash flows and the application of contract boundaries.

Reinsurance recoverables

Recoverables on retrocession and other risk mitigation, including the adjustment for expected counterparty default.

Risk margin and discounting

The cost‑of‑capital calculation and projection of future capital requirements, reflecting the Solvency UK reforms where applicable, and discounting with the prescribed risk‑free curves by currency.

Methodology and documentation

Whether approaches are proportionate, consistently applied and documented well enough for your auditors and regulator to follow the judgements made.

What you receive

Clear outputs that your board, auditors and actuarial function can each use.

Scoping note

Agreed areas of focus, data requirements, timetable and fee.

Findings report

Observations ranked by significance, with quantified impact where possible.

Recommendations

Practical actions to strengthen methodology, assumptions or documentation.

Walk‑through

A session with management and, if wanted, your external auditors.

Questions about Technical Provisions reviews

How long does a Technical Provisions review take?

It depends on scope, data readiness and the number of lines of business. We agree a timetable at scoping, normally aligned to your reporting or audit deadline.

Can you work alongside our external auditors?

Yes. Reviews are often commissioned with the audit in mind, and we can present findings directly to the audit team.

Do you need access to our systems?

No. We work from data extracts and documentation shared through a secure channel agreed at onboarding.

Do you cover both Solvency UK and Solvency II?

Yes. We review Technical Provisions prepared under either regime, including UK branches of overseas reinsurers.
